That means you need to make decisions based on efficiency and strategy.  In this article I’ll show you 3 areas where being efficient is the way to go.

A Farm Should Have Animals, Right?

In real life, yes.  Farms usually have animals.  But in the virtual world, when you’re starting out animals don’t really offer much help on Farmville farms.  They are pretty costly and don’t bring many coins back when “harvested” — and every farmville animal has something to harvest.  Aside from the obvious milk and eggs, there is also horse hair, duck down, rabbit hair, even yarn from the cats.

There is a way to acquire animals other than spending your coins, and that is to receive them as gifts.  Make sure to make lots of “neighbors” of other players and help them and give gifts generously.  Most neighbors will be generous in return with their gifts, which can be a good way to start building up a collection of animals without the initial investment.

Do I Really Have to Grow Stuff?

The lifeblood of your farm is in the crops you plant and harvest.  When you begin to grow your farm all your investing should be in plowing and planting.  The question of what to plant can be answered when you consider which crops will bring the best return on investment.  You invest time and coins for plowing and for seed, and you want the crops that will bring in the most coins for the time you’ll be playing.

If your time on the game is limited look for crops that harvest in 12 hours, or 1 day, but bring a high price.  If you can play more often and can harvest more frequently it’s worth it to plant those crops with a shorter harvest time, then turn around and replant immediately.  The coins you make from your crops will add up quickly this way, allowing you to level up in the game.

What about Barns and Tractors?

Similar to the animals, buildings and farm equipment bring a low return on investment.  You don’t want to spend all your cash on stuff to put on the farm and have none left for planting.  Wait until you accrue 10,000 or more before you start adding sheds, barns, etc.

Once you have a healthy pile of coins, you will probably have a few animals as well via gifts or purchases.  At this time buying a dairy barn for your cows and/or a chicken coop for chickens is a strategic move because by moving your animals into these structures you are able to harvest them all at the same time — very efficient.

Approach your farm like a business, make decisions like a CEO — based on efficiency and strategy — and you’ll see your farm surpass your friends’ farms in no time.  Efficient planning and decision-making means your working smarter than others, not harder.  And after all, it shouldn’t be “work”, it’s a game!  So have a blast and have the best farm possible!

Which Crops Should I Plant?

The best way to answer this question is to ask yourself what the CEO would plant if this were a business.  In a business it’s all about the bottom line, and you want to consider that with your crops as well.  To decide what’s best for your farm, factor in how much time you are willing to spend, the harvest time for each crop, the initial purchase price and the sale price of the harvest.

For example, raspberries harvest in only 2 hours, cost 35 coins to plant (20 to buy seed + 15 to plow) and sell for 46 coins, yielding a profit of 11 coins for 2 hours, or 5.5 coins/hr.  If you schedule your online time so you can harvest and replant every 2 hours, this could be quite profitable.  If however, you go to work or school all day, something with a higher price and longer harvest time would be more efficient for you.

Should I Buy Animals?

Again, by thinking of your farm as a business you can easily answer this question.  To purchase a cow costs 300 coins, it is ready to “harvest” (i.e. collect milk) in 1 day, and the milk sells for 6 coins.  It takes more than 50 days for the cow to pay for itself, so hold off on any animal purchases until you racked up 10,000 or more in coins, because the biggest way to help with Farmville is to invest in your crops.

Really there is no reason to purchase animals if you’re a good “neighbor”.  If you provide help with Farmville neighbors and give gifts as often as you can, you will probably receive gifts of animals in return.  If you don’t have to spend money to buy them, it’s worth it to keep them on your farm.

Should I Add Buildings?

One more area to hold off spending money on is buildings or other expansion.  Although a tool shed or nice red barn sure looks nice, and can add some experience points buildings are a big outlay of coins and provide little to no benefit.

An exception to this rule is once you’ve acquired a few animals, either as gifts or once you’ve earned enough coin to splurge on them then purchasing a dairy barn or chicken coop can be a good buy.  Move your cows and chickens inside, and you can suddenly become a much more efficient harvester — all the animals in the building will be ready to harvest at the same time, for maximum coin earning and best use of your time.

By treating your Farmville farm like you would a well-run business, you will maximize your experience with the game.  You’ll find yourself piling up the coins and xp and advancing in levels beyond your imagination.

Pinch Your Pennies

The temptation when you first begin playing is to decorate your farm and “make it pretty” (if you’re a woman) or add buildings & machinery, i.e. “toys” (if you’re a man).  Some of the best Farmville help I can offer is — don’t do it!  Resist the urge to spend money on anything other than plowing and planting initially.

Plant Efficiently

For example, planting raspberries is a popular option because you can harvest them in 2 hours, thus bringing in quick cash.  However, if you don’t plan to play every 2 hours, pumpkins which harvest in 8 hours or rice which harvests in 12 hours, would be more efficient choices, still bringing in a fair profit.

Play Fairly!

Do not use cheat engines! It’s a popular option and people have used them with other Facebook games, but frankly using cheat engines could result in your account being banned from not only Farmville, but other games as well.

Generosity Pays Off

I’ve mentioned before that generosity pays off, and it does in several ways.  First, you earn coins and experience points (“xp”) nearly every time you help on a neighbor’s farm, whether it’s shooing foxes or gophers, raking leaves or pulling weeds.  These are ways to help that are “free”.

Giving gifts is free, but you’re allowed only so many per day of play.  However being generous with gifts can fetch you some nice gifts when your neighboring farmers reciprocate with gifts of their own.  Fertilizing another farmer’s crops costs you a bit of coin, but gives you xp and usually your neighbors will return the favor by fertilizing your crops when they need it.

Earning Ribbons

“Winning” ribbons will usually give you a bonus of a few xp and a small pile of coins, and many of the available ribbons can be earned with very little effort.  Meeting the minimum requirements earns you a yellow ribbon.  Next you earn white, red and finally a blue ribbon.

Although just doing your regular farm stuff will easily get you a yellow ribbon in many of the categories, it’s a good thing to be mindful of the requirements for the next award.  For instance the Local Celebrity ribbons are earned by adding neighbors, the Good Samaritan by helping neighbors, Cream of the Crop for harvesting your own crops, etc.

Be Efficient

Your goal should not be to have the “prettiest” farm, but the most efficiently run.  As you practice generosity, for example, be aware that sometimes helping your neighbor pays more than others, literally.  The first 20 people you help in a day pay you 20 coins and 5 xp.  After that you get only 5 coins and 1 xp, for the very same effort.

Also in the name of efficiency, plan your planting and harvesting so that you’re not having to set an alarm and pick your crops in the middle of the night.  Schedule your harvest around the time(s) of day you will playing Farmville, so that your schedule serves you, not the other way around.  This is one of the farmville tricks your family will appreciate.

Helping your neighboring farmers, keeping an eye on your Ribbons, doing it all in an efficient manner are part of a winning strategy for Farmville.  This should help a great deal in building your farm.

You’ve managed to avoid it as long as you could, because your Facebook time is about being efficient — hop on, update status, hop off.   But once you finally checked it out, you’re hooked! Now your Facebook time is about dominating the game.

In this post I’ll pass on some of the Farmville hints I wished I had known when I started.

There are several different ways you can approach the game, and chances are if you’re reading this then you’re serious about getting some quick Farmville tips.   Before you can figure out what help you need, it will be useful to determine your goal for the game.

There are 3 basic areas to focus on, and which one you choose will determine which strategies for Farmville you will use. You can go after a pile of coins, attempt to level up quickly, or shoot for farm expansion.

Pile up the Coins

If you want to amass quick “wealth”, you’ll want to treat your farm like a business, and go for the money crops. Plant and harvest, then reinvest your coin for more seed. At this point avoid adding animals, buildings and decorations if your goal is to rack up coins.

Advance to Higher Levels

The way to level up is by accumulating experience points, or “xp”, and almost everything you do will earn points. When just beginning, an easy way to get points and coins is to help your neighbors. Chances are you have friends on facebook who are also playing, so click on the “My Neighbors” tab and you’ll see “jobs” that some of your neighbors need, like chasing away foxes or crows, raking leaves or pulling weeds. Initially, performing these tasks earns you 20 coins and a few xp; as you advance the amounts you earn decrease.

Expand Your Farm

In order to enlarge the size and scope of your farm you will need neighbors, and lots of them. So make sure you ask all your friends to be your neighbors, and it might be helpful also to join a Farmville group to meet more “neighbors”.

Obviously all three areas work together: you need to advance in level and acquire coins in order to expand your farm, etc. But there is a definite difference to your strategy depending on your goals.

Be a Generous Neighbor

This is a quality that is useful no matter what Farmville strategy you use. Each time you help a neighbor, you are awarded coins and experience, as I’ve already mentioned, and your neighbors are likely to help you in return, which can add to your xp.

Another way to be generous is with gifts. At each level there are free gifts available for you to send to your neighbors. As you level up, the types of gifts will vary and the values will increase. If you give gifts to other farmers, they will send gifts back to you, some of which add to your xp, some can be sold for coins, and some will add to the value of your farm. Bottom line is, it pays to be generous.

So as you get started on your farm, decide what your goal is, determine the best strategies, and happy farming!
